Who is Saint Expedite?

Saint Expedite, also known as Expeditus, was born in Armenia. It is not clear when he was born, but it is known that he died a Martyr in 303 A.D in Melitene Turkey.
According to Catholic traditions, Saint Expedite was a Roman Centurion who was based in Armenia. He was initially a pagan, but later converted to Christianity; as many Roman Soldiers did. Saint Expedites conversion to Christianity was what eventually lead to his death during the Diocletian Persecution of Christians in 303 A.D.

Before his conversion, it is said that Satan came to him in the form of a crow and told him to hold off one more day and to convert to Christianity the next day. Saint Expedite refused, crushed the crow under his foot, and declared, ” I will be Christian today!” He was be-headed the next day. This is why Saint Expedite is associated with urgent needs and speedy results. It is also the reason he is depicted in art, murals and statues the as a Roman soldier with his left hand holding a palm leaf — the symbol of martyrdom — and his right hand is raised high holding a cross bearing the word HODIE (today). His left foot is stomping on a crow which carries a ribbon in its mouth with the word CRAS (tomorrow) written on it.

Is St. Expedite Recognized By The Catholic Church?

The Roman Catholic Church will not officially recognize St. Expedite; but, at the same time, they won’t fully discount him either. While he is a fully canonized saint recognized by the Roman Catholic Church, Saint Expedite was removed from the official calendar of Roman Catholic saints (along with Saint Christopher, St. Philomena, Saint Valentine and many others. These saints were removed from the official calendar because their death date cannot be verified. However, his removal from the calendar has not resulted in a decline in his popularity. On the contrary, this saint is gaining more followers by the day. Hoodoos, rootworkers, conjure doctors, spiritualists and followers of New Orleans Voudou appreciate his worth and have embraced St. Expedite as one of their patron saints.

There are very few churches where one can find his image, especially in North America. New Orleans has been one of the few American cities where St. Expedite has enjoyed wide-spread recognition, and a large statue of him can be found in the Our Lady Of Guadalupe Church in New Orleans.
